They’re tropical. They’re yellow. They’re cute on a coffee table. They’re delightful in a drink. They’re pineapples! In honor of Pineapple Day, June 27, here are some juicy facts about the happiest fruit of all.
______
A Whole New Fruit
Christopher Columbus is most known for discovering the “New World.” A lesser known fact about this notable explorer is that he’s also the first Westerner to discover the pineapple. In 1493, he and his shipmates found pineapples on the Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe. He then introduced this golden treasure to Europe where it was considered an “exotic prize of the New World.”
Where the Pineapples Are
The pineapple is native to warm-weathered areas. Historically, Hawaii dominated as the world’s largest producer of pineapples. However, nowadays the sweet honor is shared amongst Brazil, Costa Rica, and the Philippines.
What’s in a Name?
The tropical fruit was given its English name because of its exterior resemblance to a pinecone and interior to an apple. Prickly nifty, right?
Be Our Guest
When Columbus discovered the pineapple, he noticed Caribbean people placed the fruit above their home doorways. This symbolized hospitality and friendship. It also meant these homes welcomed strangers (like Columbus himself). Just as he brought the tropical fruit to Europe, Columbus also introduced the tradition. Europeans embraced this practice of welcoming, and soon carvings of pineapples were placed outside their homes in Europe and New England. In fact, this fruit was so rare in the Western World that when hosts shared a pineapple with guests, it was considered the truest expression of graciousness.
Safe And Sound
According to local legend, New England sea captains also used the pineapple as a symbol of safe return. Placing the pineapple outside their home was an invitation for friends and family to visit and to listen to stories of adventure.
